Serial killings of the state

Another migrant dead after a police raid

Another migrant is dead following a police raid, and two more are in hospital. Another anonymous death at the hands of state violence.

Three days after the parliamentary elections, in which the fascist party ELAM doubled its seats, the state intensifies its racist thanatopolitics. As we said recently, law and order for ELAM means the people accepting their impoverishment. For the ruling class, it means the world laughing at the death of another migrant who fell from a balcony, rather than turning its anger towards those who steal our homes and wages. The so-called ‘social liberalism’ preached by Christodoulides is nothing other than social cannibalism.

This latest state killing adds to a series of incidents that have occurred under the current government. On April 10, 2024, a police raid led to the death of Anisur Rahman in Limassol. His housemates were summarily transferred to the Kofinou ‘reception’ centre and forced to sign ‘voluntary’ repatriation papers. OnJanuary 6, 2025, police killed Shoaib Khan during an ‘anti-poaching’ operation in Potamia. For these state killings, no one has been held accountable. In the last 16 months, we have also seen: nine victims of fires or explosions in homes where people were trying to keep warm; seven victims in a shipwreck off Cyprus on March 17, 2025; and two victims from the collapse of a block of flats in Germasogeia on April 10, 2026.

Migrant deaths under ‘unexplained circumstances’ during police operations foreshadow the future the ruling class has planned for all the poor of this country. The devaluation of migrants’ lives is tied to the normalisation of the devaluation of Cypriot lives: terrible wages, no housing access, no environmental protection. Fascism is coming for everyone. Even if the most vulnerable experience it more intensely. Even if some think violence will only be directed at foreign bodies.
